There is a wonderful story in the Old Testament about a young boy named Samuel, who literally heard the voice of the Lord. It is found in the book of I Samuel 3:1-21. The one statement that particularly stands out is Samuel’s reply:

Speak LORD, for Your servant is listening.

I Samuel 3:10 (NIV)

God rarely speaks audibly, but He often speaks through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and God’s Spirit lives in you?

I Corinthians 3:16 (NIV)

As we continue to pursue a heart that is soft and open to His voice, as we daily center our thoughts on Jesus and His word, we will hear Him speak. Often in a whisper, the Holy Spirit will bring to mind a verse or a biblical principle that we are to live out in that moment.

  • He may ask us to pursue loving others deeply from the heart
  • He may ask us to help, in a practical way, those in need
  • He may ask us to share our faith with those who are far from Him
  • He may remind us that we are His children, loved and designed to serve Him and His purposes
  • He may remind us of a verse that we’ve memorized in the past, which may suddenly come to mind for the situation at hand
  • He may send us comfort in time of need
  • He may cause our anxiousness to disappear
